extraneous (adj) irrelevant.

When you talk of extraneous matters, you talk of things not related to the topic you are dealing with or the topic of discussion. Lawyers may bring in matters extraneous to the case on hand if they refer to matters not directly connected with the case. When you talk about the conduct of model citizen, a reference to their way of dressing or the kind of food they prefer is extraneous. That is it is irrelevant to the mater on hand.

  • His book on 19th century British Literature did not become popular because it includes extraneous matters like contemporary French economy and the like.
  • The judge had to warn the counsel repeatedly not to bring in matters extraneous to the case but confine herself to the details connected with the case.
