faction (noun) clique; a small group within a political party, or within a larger group.

A small group of people who, within a larger group, have different opinions, aims, or ideas from the rest of the group is a faction. A political party has factions, if within the party there are small groups who differ with the others of the party in their ideas, opinions, etc.. There may be factions in administrations, if those in the administration are divided into small groups, each having differences of opinion with the others.

  • The factions in the ruling party have agreed to bury their differences and stand united to face the attacks of the opposition party.
  • The race-based factions in the administrative staff work at cross purposes, each obstructing the proposals of the other. As a result decisions are delayed and the efficiency of administration is affected.
