fallow (adj) (of land) uncultivated.

Land left unsowed after tilling or digging up is fallow. Land left uncultivated is also fallow. Land is left fallow mainly for improving the quality of the soil, so that there may be better yield the next season.

  • Farmers let land lie fallow for a period and sow it after a gap so that the quality of the soil may improve and become more productive.
  • John Smith is a knowledgeable farmer. He has two plots. He sows one and keeps the other fallow alternatively, and that enables him to get a good harvest from both of them.
