fetid (adj) smelling bad and unpleasant; stinking.

When vegetables and other organic matter decay they give out fetid smell, that is, a very bad and unpleasant smell. The air is fetid, if the air at a place smells bad. The waters of a lake may smell fetid because of the rotting weeds in it. Fetid smell, in short, is bad and unpleasant smell.
