fictitious (adj) invented rather than real; false.

A fictitious name is not a real name; it is imagined and does not exist in reality. The characters in a novel or a play are fictitious in that they are imagined and not real. If a novel describes a place and address that are fictitious, they are created by the author's imagination and not real.

  • Though most of Sir Walter Scott's novels are historical, not all the incidents or characters in them are real. They are fictitious, invented by the author.
  • The author forewarns that all the characters and incidents in his play are fictitious, and that any resemblance to real persons or events is purely accidental.
