filch (verb) steal.
When a person filches, they steal some things, especially of low value - a small amount of money, a cheap wristwatch, or things of a little value like them. Fruits from a shop and small things from department stores are among the things filched by people committing petty thefts.
- Fagin, a notorious old thief in Dickens' novel 'Oliver Twist', gathered street children and trained them in filching, and he made money out of the things they stole.
- Ham was fired from his job for no more a crime than filching stationery from the company's stores.
