filibuster (verb) delaying vote/legislation in a parliament by long speeches.

When a member of a legislature is against a vote being taken for the passing of a bill, they delay it by long speeches. This is filibustering. Senator Filibuster of the US was notorious for this kind of activity, and hence the word. When a member of a legislature filibusters, they prolong their speeches and delay the proceedings of the house.

  • The senator's attempt at filibustering succeeded as he was still making his speech, when the house rose for the day. So the vote on the bill could not be taken.
  • Though Senator Johnson filibustered for nearly two hours and a half, just to have the vote postponed, it did bring some relevant points to the notice of the house which had not been aware of them before.
