finesse (noun) delicate skill.

Skill in doing things, especially complicated things, in a delicate and neat manner is finesse. When you show finesse in handling a situation, you deal with it very skillfully and in a manner that avoids difficulty and embarrassment for all. It requires tact to have finesse. Suppose you settle a dispute to the satisfaction of the parties concerned and hurting none, you have finesse. A circus artiste displays finesse in performing with skill his breathtaking and highly risky feats. A good sword fighter displays a lot of skill and delicacy in handling the sword if they have finesse.

  • The finesse with which the matador had the bull going round him without at all getting hurt drew the applause of the spectators.
  • The finesse which the circus artiste displayed in her thirty feet long tightrope walking twenty-five feet above ground filled everyone with admiration.
