A long deep opening, especially in the earth or rock, is a fissure. A fissure is a crevice. Rock faces of mountains have fissures mainly because of the action of wind and weather.

  • Deep fissures in the earth are caused by earthquakes and because of geological factors like the unsettling of the earth, and are widened as time goes on.
  • The mountaineer could scale the steep mountain by seeking hand and foot holds in the fissures on it.
