floe (noun) a large mass of ice, floating on the sea.

An ice floe is a large mass of ice broken from a larger mass and floating on the sea. Ships have to move slowly and cautiously in areas where there are floes. Floes that are masses of ice floating on the sea obstruct the free movement of ships and other smaller craft.

  • Floes look like white islands on the sea and, especially in winter, may prove a hurdle to ships and boats.
  • The floe which the ship hit, suddenly began to melt and made it easy for the ship to pass.
