flora (noun) (used as part of the phrase, flora and fauna) all the species of the plants in an area or in a particular period.

The flora of a region or of a period includes all the varieties of plants found in the region or in the period we are referring to. The coniferous trees, for example, are among the flora of the North Atlantic region; that is, they are among the trees growing in that region.

  • The elm is an important species of the flora of the northern part of the American continent.
  • Unlike the fauna of earlier ages, very few species forming the flora of a region have become extinct. Very few or no species of plants have become extinct over millions of years.
