flotsam (noun) (used as part of the phrase, 'flotsam and jetsam') broken pieces of wood, plastic, or any other material from wrecked boats, ships, etc., floating on the sea and along the beach.

Pieces of wood, broken parts of boats, wrecked parts of ships, plastic waste material, etc., found floating on the sea and along the beaches are flotsam. Flotsam includes all kinds of garbage and dirty and waste material found on the sea surface.

  • As they rowed across the not too deep waters of the sea, they chanced upon flotsam that included a tin trunk with some jewelry intact.
  • Sea water is polluted mostly by flotsam resulting from the wreckage of ships and boats. Added to it is the jetsam, which is all the garbage, discharged into sea by ships.
