When you flout a law or a custom you show that you have no respect for it by violating it openly and deliberately. When you flout a law you do not respect it and you openly violate it. You flout an authority when you intentionally act against its orders.

  • Most member nations of the UN flout its resolutions because the UN lacks the power to enforce its resolutions, and to punish those who violate it.
  • Most motorists flout traffic rules. They do not understand the simple point that traffic rules are for their own safety and violating them could cost them their lives.
