foil (noun) contrast; very thin sheet of metal used for wrapping food, etc..

When two things, persons, etc., are opposite each other in their appearance or qualities, they are a foil to each other. Black is a foil to white. Fertile plains are a foil to the desert. A rash person is a foil to a balanced and cool person. A thin sheet of metal, especially of aluminum, wrapped around food is a foil. Foil packing helps preserve heat and flavor of the food.

  • The calm and quiet nature of the father contrasts with the irritable temper and rashness of the son. They present a foil to each other.
  • The foil was not properly wrapped around the food and it spilt all over the children's clothes.
