foil (verb) frustrate; prevent evil plans.

When police foil an attempt at burglary, they prevent the burglary from taking place, by acting in a timely manner. When a bank robbery is foiled, the robbers are prevented from robbing the bank. Preventing an evil plan from being put into action is foiling it. To stop something, especially an illegal thing from taking place, is to foil it.

  • The customs officials acted effectively and foiled the attempts of the racketeers to smuggle some valuable museum pieces out of the country.
  • Having come to know of the plans of the Ku Klux Klan to burn down the black settlement on the outskirts of the city, the police acted promptly and sternly and foiled their plans.
