foray (noun) a short and sudden attack.

When an army makes a foray it makes a sudden attack on the enemy camp, especially to rob it of food and other supplies. A business company makes a foray, when in its attempt to diversify it starts a different line of business or activity. An oil company makes foray into hotel business if it, in addition to its oil line, starts business in the hotel line.

  • The foray by the enemy army in the early hours of the morning took the soldiers totally by surprise and left them without food supplies.
  • The computer giant is making a foray into the manufacture of highly sophisticated electronic equipment and into telephone services.
