Where a river is not deep so that we can walk or drive across is a ford. It is a shallow point of a river where we can cross it on foot or drive across.
- It is not a very bright idea to have a bridge across a river very close to a ford, as we can easily walk or drive across the river there, and the bridge is unnecessary at that point.
- The day being hot, James thought of crossing the river at its ford rather than along the bridge some miles away so that he could feel the cool waters of the river and have some relief from the oppressive heat.
