When you forestall something you prevent it from happening by taking precautionary measures. In case the police fear any law and order situation, they forestall it by posting sufficient police personnel in the places likely to be troubled. That is, they prevent any bad situation by such measures. A government forestalls rebellion by arresting the leaders of the rebellion, even when they are planning it.

  • To forestall any criticism against her, she resigned her job as soon as she came to know that some of her opponents were trying to implicate her in a financial scandal.
  • The security forces forestalled the attack of terrorists by raiding their hideouts and training camps and arresting a number of them.
