fortitude (noun) courage; bravery.

Fortitude enables people to act bravely. People who have fortitude are not afraid of taking risks. They do not fear dangers but face them. Fortitude is the ability to face trouble or bear pain.

  • Ann showed the fortitude expected of the eldest surviving member of the family of three children left orphans at a young age. With rare courage she gave herself education, and saw her younger sisters through school.
  • When the last ten feet of the mountain had to be scaled, the captain set ahead while the others were thinking of backing off. His fortitude inspired others to scale the mountain.
