foster (verb) bring up; help to grow.

When a person brings up a child not their own, they foster the child. When you bring up another person's child into your home for a period without becoming its legal parent you foster the child. When your actions help the growth of a feeling, skill, activity, etc., you foster it. Schools are expected to foster fraternity and friendly feeling. That is, they are expected to help the growth of brotherly or sisterly or friendly feeling among the pupils.

  • The UN was founded to foster international understanding and world peace, and it has, to some extent, succeeded in preventing wars.
  • In the present situation, there is every need to foster racial, communal harmony and tolerance. Once that is done successfully, the world will be certainly a better place to live in.
