When something fails completely because a new problem has arisen, it founders. When something fails totally because a new difficulty has arisen, it founders. A marriage founders on suspicion, if because of suspicions between the couple, they separate. An institute founders on problems of funding, if for financial problems, it has to be closed down. A ship founders if it sinks. The Titanic foundered on an iceberg. That is, it sank on hitting an iceberg.
