fractious (adj) unruly or rebellious; irritable.

A person is fractious when they are easily upset, they are irritable. Children are fractious when they are denied what they ask for. That is, children are easily upset when we don't give them what they want. A person is fractious when they are rebellious. A person or an animal difficult to control is fractious. A rebellious group is a fractious group. The fractious group in a party often rebels against the party's commands.

  • The fractious behavior of the student was resented by all his classmates because the teacher whom he disobeyed was a good person.
  • The child was fractious as it was cutting teeth, as children usually are when they cut teeth. It was irritable and often cried.
