franchise (noun) permission or right given by an authority; the right to vote.

When a company gives a formal permission to someone to sell its goods or services in a particular area, the formal permission is a franchise. A franchise is also a permission a government gives to someone to carry on a public service on commercial lines. A rail company gives franchise to someone if it gives them the right to sell refreshments on its trains. Franchise is the right to vote. A citizen, if for any reason, is not allowed to vote, they are denied franchise. You exercise your franchise if you use your right to vote and cast it.
