frieze (noun) an ornamental band on a wall inside or outside a building.

The decorative bands around the top of the walls under the roof, outside or inside a building, are friezes. Most old buildings have friezes on their walls. They are purely decorative and serve no other purpose than add beauty to the building.

  • The frieze on the wall of the church prayer hall was adorned with pictures of the birth of the Lord Christ, whereas those on the outer wall depicted Moses holding the tablets of ten commandants.
  • The frieze on the outer wall of the building has worn out as a result of its exposure to wind and weather.
