frivolous (adj) (of a person) silly and amusing (on the wrong occasion).

When a person is frivolous they are amusing but in way that is not suitable for the occasion. Your comments are frivolous if they are funny, but are out of place in a serious situation. A frivolous matter is a totally unimportant matter. Discussing a person's suit and appearance at a meeting on national economy is an example of frivolous behavior. A frivolous litigation is a court case about a very minor matter. A frivolous complaint is a silly complaint.

  • Everyone at the party meeting were annoyed that while they were discussing election strategy, Harrison was indulging in frivolous talk and diverting their attention from the serious discussion.
  • Smithson went to court on a frivolous lawsuit. The judge admonished him for bringing up such a silly matter before the court and wasting its time.
