When you frustrate someone's plans, you cause their failure. When something or someone frustrates an attempt or a plan, it or they cause its failure. The police by their timely arrival frustrated the attempts of the burglars to rob the bank. This means that the timely arrival of the police caused the failure of the burglar's attempt to rob the bank.

  • The father of the girl was too clever for the young lovers and frustrated all their attempts to meet each other, with the result their marriage appeared a distant dream.
  • The security forces frustrated the plans of the terrorists to blow up the trade centre by killing all of them in a surprise attack on their hideout.
