fulcrum (noun) the point a lever turns on or rests on, or is balanced; the most important part of a situation or activity.

The point on which a lever turns or is supported for balance is the fulcrum. The physical balance, for example, has a central point on which it rests. That is called fulcrum. The most important part of an activity or a situation is its fulcrum. Good physical fitness is the fulcrum on which an athlete's performance rests. That is, only a physically fit athlete can perform well. It is physical fitness that enables him to perform well.

  • The seesaw that children play on has a board balanced in the middle by a cross bar which acts as a fulcrum for the two ends of the seesaw to go up and down.
  • Elections are the fulcrum on which any democracy turns and is balanced.
