fulsome (adj) too praising or too apologetic in speech or in writing.

When your speech is fulsome, it is too full of praise for someone to be sincere. If a piece of writing is fulsome, it praises a person too much for the writer to appear sincere. When you tender a fulsome apology you are so apologetic that one doubts if you are really sincere.

  • The union leaders' fulsome praise for the generosity of the chairman annoyed the workers who began to doubt his loyalty to the workers' union.
  • Jonathan's speech was heavy with fulsome praise for the governor. It made many doubt if he too had political ambitions and was trying to win the governor's favor.
