functionary (noun) official of a government or of a company.

A person with official duties, not always important, in the government, is a government functionary. A person having not so important duties in a party is a party functionary. A functionary of a company is a person who has rather unimportant duties to perform for the company.

  • Government functionaries always want their importance to be felt. They therefore do everything they can to delay things by insisting on procedure.
  • Because of the employer-friendly attitude of the company its functionaries are very loyal to it, though they do not have very important jobs in the company.
