galvanize (verb) energize; shock or surprise someone or a group of people into action.

When a leader galvanizes their followers, they make them rise to action by shocking them or surprising them with news of imminent danger or fear. The prospect of immediate gains galvanizes a company into action, that is, the hope of making immediate profits may make the company swing into action.

  • The manager galvanized his staff into action by talking to them of the threat of competitions and loss in profits and the consequent cut in their salaries.
  • Sir Winston Churchill, wartime Prime Minister of Britain galvanized the nation into facing World War II bravely by his war slogan, 'V for Victory.'
