garbled (adj) (of a message, report, story, etc.) confused and unclear.

A garbled report is a confusing and unclear report by a person in shock or in a hurry. A garbled message confuses the listener, because the person giving the message is not able to speak or think clearly. A newspaper gives a garbled account of an incident, if the account lacks clarity.

  • The Senator was angry that the media gave a garbled report of his speech, because of which he feared that the public might misunderstand him.
  • Shocked as she was, Jennifer could give only a garbled version of the exchange of blows at the party between two young men. It was not clear from her account who had started it all.
