gargoyle (noun) water outlet in the shapes of ugly persons or animals for the water on the roofs of buildings to flow out.

Outlets in all kinds of ugly shapes (of persons or animals) to let out water on the roofs of buildings are gargoyles. They were part of the architecture in the olden days. Rain or other water collecting on the roof of a building was let out through holes resembling the mouths of ugly persons or animals.

  • The old palace had gargoyles in the form of a dragon head. When water flowed out of them it looked as though the dragon was throwing out water through its mouth.
  • The gargoyles atop the eighteenth century building are in the shape of a fat-bellied and bald man and it was really amusing to see water flowing out of the mouth of the figure.
