garnish (verb) decorate (a food item).

You garnish a food item when you decorate it with another food item just to make it look attractive. The icing on the cake is an example of garnishing. We decorate a dish of food with a small amount of another food when we garnish it. Sometimes we garnish dishes with a slice of tomato, pieces of cashew or of almond.

  • Though the chef garnished the dish very attractively it was not at all tasty and I did not feel like having a second helping of it.
  • Each of the dishes was garnished with a sprinkling of raisins and slices of tomato.
