genealogy (noun) the study of a family history.
The history of a person's family including the study of all their ancestors is genealogy. Genealogy is record of a person's ancestry, that is, a study of when, where, and with whom the family began and of the members of all its generations down to its present generation. A diagram showing the line of descent, a family tree, is also genealogy. It is, in other words, lineage.
- Giovanni traces his genealogy to a seven generation back Italian ancestor who from the back alleys of Milan migrated to the US and made it big in leather industry.
- Smith's genealogy clearly establishes him as the sixth generation descendant of an Irish feudal family which migrated to the state of New England.
