generic (adj) belonging to or of a whole class of objects or species of living beings.

A word that describes a whole class of things or a whole species of animals or plants is generic. Such a word is a generic term. Cats is a generic name because it applies to all animals of the cat family from the domestic cat to the wild cats namely the tiger, the leopard, etc.. 'Canine' is a generic term.describing anything related to the species of dogs. A generic trait is a characteristic that is found in all the members of a species.

  • The ape is a generic term referring to all tailless monkeys like orangutans, gorillas, etc., perhaps next only to humans in the scale of evolution.
  • Palm is a generic term describing to all varieties of plants of the palm species including the date palm, the toddy palm, etc..
