gentry (noun) members of the higher classes of society.

The local gentry are the group of people belonging to the high social classes in an area. The landed gentry are the people having landed property in an area for some generations past. The gentry are the people of the wealthy classes and of high social standing.

  • Charles Hensley was among the wealthiest of the local gentry of Boston and was regarded as their leader. He traced his roots to a wealthy land-owning family in England.
  • Roger Brown was the most influential of the gentry of New England. They were rather conservative and kept close to themselves.
