germane (adj) relevant.

An idea or a remark which is germane is relevant to the argument that is going on. An idea or a remark connected with a situation or incident in suitable or important manner is germane to it. 'Your proposal, though interesting, is not germane to the present economic situation.' This means that the proposal is no way connected with the present economic situation.

  • The judge dismissed the prosecutor's remarks about the personal appearance of the prisoner as not germane to the charge of murder he was facing.
  • Most of the speaker's points about the nation's economy were not germane to the topic she had chosen to speak on, namely the falling educational standards in the universities.
