germinal (adj) in the first stage of growth or development.

When a proposal or a plan is in its early stages, and is yet to see action, it is in its germinal stage. It is yet to take a shape. Anything in its formative stage is in its germinal stage. An idea just striking a person's mind is in the germinal stage. Germinal stage is the embryonic stage.

  • The proposal to build a bridge across the part of the sea between India and Sri Lanka is still in its germinal stage. A lot of details have to be worked out and the feasibility studied before it becomes a reality.
  • The idea that bacteria might be the cause of food decomposition and that food could be preserved by freezing it was in its germinal stage during the World War II period. It took some years before frozen foods came to be used.
