gerontocracy (noun) government ruled by old people.

A government by a set of old people is a gerontocracy. A government in which old people hold key positions and decide policies and execute them is a gerontocracy.

  • Soon after the death of Stalin, the former Soviet Union came under a gerontocracy as most of the powerful positions in the Presidium and the Executive were held by people above seventy years of age.
  • The youngsters in the party are up against the gerontocracy in the country. The average age of the cabinet ministers being 72 they demand that they step down and make room for young blood.
