gerrymander (verb) division of electoral districts to favor a party or a candidate.

When the lines and the size of a constituency are changed to favor a political party or a candidate, there is gerrymandering. Just before elections, the party in power usually redraws the boundaries and changes the size of electoral districts to suit its candidates, and thus get an unfair advantage. We then say that the ruling party has gerrymandered.

  • The opposition's complaint is that the government has gerrymandered by having the size and borders of the constituencies altered to suit the ruling party's candidates.
  • The observers charged the government with unduly interfering in the electoral process by trying to gerrymander with a view to having its supporters in majority in some of the changed constituencies.
