gist (noun) summary or substance.

The summary of a piece of writing, a conversation, or a speech is gist. A gist is the essential points of a speech, writing, or conversation. The gist of all that he spoke is that he does not want to be involved in our business venture. That is, the substance of what he said was that he did not want to join our venture. 'The gist of his speech is that we should be ready for any sacrifice.' This means that the essential point of his speech is that we must be ready for sacrifices.

  • The politicianís hour-long speech had nothing solid or new in it. The gist of it does not exceed a few lines in print.
  • The President does not have the patience or the time to go through the detailed reports of the newspaper. His secretary prepares for him the gist of all the reports which takes only half an hour to go through.
