glimmer (verb) shine faintly and flicker.

A candle glimmers because it gives faint light and flickers. A light which glimmers does not shine very brightly. 'An oil lamp glimmered in one corner of the temple.' This means, the room was dimly lit because the oil lamp was not very bright and it flickered. Hope glimmers in you when you have faint hope of something happening.
