gnarled (adj) (of trees, their trunks and roots) twisted and rough with hard lumps.

The gnarled trunk of a tree is its rough and twisted trunk with hard lumps and knots. The branches of a gnarled tree are twisted and have hard lumps on them. A large old tree might also have gnarled roots, if some of them, twisted and rough, spread above the ground.

  • The gnarled tree, in spite of being twisted and rough, and in spite of the hard lumps around its trunk, has grandeur of its own, and is at least three hundred years old.
  • The gnarled oak tree with its twists and lumps has been the abode of a number of singing birds nestling on its branches, and of a number of reptiles living in the holes of its knots.
