goad (verb) urge on.

When you goad someone into doing something, you annoy them to the point of doing it. The section of the crowd at a boxing match goad the boxer they support if they encourage and urge them on to action. When all that you do cannot make a person take action, you goad them in vain. To keep urging a person to act is to goad them.

  • When Nichols bought a new car, Simon goaded him into selling his old car to him, which, he however, could not use for long because it was totally damaged in an accident.
  • Lucy, goaded by her sister into acting in the play on the college annual day, discovered her potential as an actress. She thanked her sister for insisting that she act.
