gouge (verb) charge unreasonably excess.

When a person forces you to pay an unfairly high price for a commodity or service they gouge you. The scarcity of a commodity may prompt people to gouge you, that is, the scarcity of a commodity may encourage the sellers to force you to pay an unjustly high price for it.

  • In view of the huge rush for the show, the organizers are trying to gouge the audience by charging three or four times the normal rates of admission.
  • The public demanded that the government crackdown on the racketeers who had been gouging the public three or four times the normal price of the scarce item.
