grandiose (adj) impressive and impractical.
Grandiose schemes are very grand and impressive but can never become a reality because they are too complicated, too expensive, and impractical. A bridge of hundreds of miles across the sea is a grandiose scheme in that impressive though the scheme looks, it cannot be executed because of the complications and the expenditures involved. Grandiose notions are ideas which no doubt are great, but which cannot be turned into reality because of their impracticality.
