granulate (verb) form into little hard pieces or grains.

When a substance is reduced to the form of little hard pieces, it is granulated. Granules are little hard pieces and changing a substance into granules is granulating it. We talk of granulated coffee or sugar, when we mean coffee or sugar in the form of small hard pieces.

  • Zinc is granulated for use in chemical experiments because in the form of granules it reacts more quickly with other elements, than in its usual form.
  • Instant coffee is usually granulated so that it can be preserved in this form for a longer time, and can easily dissolve in water or milk.
