gratuitous (adj) offered freely; uncalled for.

Gratuitous advice is uncalled for, and unneeded advice often having a harmful effect. Gratuitous comments are unasked for comments and are likely to have bad effects. Gratuitous violence is needless violence and is unwarranted. An example of such violence is the violence in some of the movies.

  • Susan told Lucy to keep her opinions to herself and not trouble her with her gratuitous comments as she was not eager to have her opinions.
  • As he found that the lawyer was trying to mislead him, the detective inspector told him to stop giving him gratuitous advice, as he needed no one's advice.
