grill (verb) cook food over strong direct fire; question severely.

To cook food directly over a strong fire is to grill it. You grill sausages, bacon, etc., when you cook them directly over the fire. When you grill someone you put them a number of serious questions to get the needed information from them. When the police grill a prisoner, they put them a series of questions about their actions, movements, opinions, etc., to get information important for a case. Police, detectives, and intelligence officers grill suspects or those involved in serious cases for important clues.

  • My choice is for grilled food, as cooked over direct fire, it is not as oily as the foods cooked otherwise.
