heterodox (adj) unorthodox; unconventional.
Heterodox opinions are those which differ from or contradict the opinions accepted as correct and holy by a religion or by a society. Heterodox beliefs and practices are almost the opposite to those of the established church, religion, or traditional beliefs.
- Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution was held as heterodox in the early days of its propounding. In spite of being scientific, it was not taught in schools, as it differed in many ways from what the Church believed and what the Bible says about the origin of human beings.
- The views of the progressive thinkers were always denounced as heterodox by the Church of the Middle Ages, as it felt that these views were a challenge to its authority.
